The experience of getting a haircut is different for every kid. Some are excited and look forward to Haircuts, but for others, the experience can be overwhelming and even a little scary, especially for our friends who may have special needs or sensory differences. At Laughs & Locks we aim to make every haircut a great experience and our stylist Miss Kenna is excited and ready to work with you and your child through wiggles, tears, and fears to ensure they look and feel great when the haircut is complete. Take a look at how we can help make haircuts for kiddo's with special needs and sensory differences a better experience as well as some tips to try before and after each haircut. Kenna is always open to hear how to further accommodate your kiddo, she does lobby cuts where kids play while she cuts hair as they go. She explains every step of the way and interacts with the kiddo's with conversation and fun pop it toys. There are tons of items throughout the store to play eye spy with, or just stand at the front door and get haircut while looking outside. Every kiddo has their own Mojo and Miss Kenna follows the kiddo's lead .
Preparing For Kiddo's Haircut
Miss Kenna has years of experience working with children who may need a little extra time and attention when it comes to their haircuts. Here is some tips and tricks we have learned over the years that have helped some kiddos along the way.
Childs Routine And Schedule, after school, Or after a long stimulating day may not be the Ideal time for child who may be overstimulated. Make haircuts routine events. Many children with special needs thrive with routines, so adding haircuts into your regular schedule may help them get more comfortable with the experience. Most kids need a trim every six weeks, so this could be a good interval to start with. We recommend booking with Kenna each time, so there is an extra level of familiarity.

Talk to your child about the experience. Show them pictures of Laughs & Locks so they know what to expect, we have smart TV’s with streaming services and can turn on their favorite movie. We also have video game station with regular salon chair, we have all inclusive games such as Monster Trucks, Paw Patrol Sonic The Hedge Hog and Ro-blox ect…
You can also look up videos of other children getting haircuts and explain what is going to happen before each haircut to help establish the routine of getting a haircut.
Contact us to schedule a time or feel free to just drop by the salon and meet Miss. Kenna and let your child become familiar with her and the atmosphere.
Consider packing a tablet, snacks, favorite toy or stuffy that brings kiddo comfort to hold onto during the haircut.
(we do have small snacks and drinks for sale for $0.75 apiece)
